In 1991, the county received snow on March 30. In March 1990, the county recieved seven inches of snow, the latest falling on March 25. In that sameVear, snow fell on April 6, measuring three inches.
“It’s odd,” said Mr. Wingfield, adding the other significant factor he finds with the weather recently is that as we move into the weekend temperatures should be eight degrees cooler than at the beginning of March.
March departed leaving three nights with temperatures at 18 degrees and the coolest daytime temperature at 37 degree. For some the cooler weather is welcome.
“I’d like for it to stay cool for another month,” said Mr. Williams, adding the cooler weather keeps peach and apple blossoms from getting too anxious, blooming too soon and being cut down by frost.
“There has been a little bit already,” he said, adding the damage done to peach trees is very slight, “hardly worth mentioning.”
He said the peach buds are showing pink and the apple branches are “silver-tipped.” It’s all fairly safe at this point. But, if we hit a hot spell, we could be in trouble.
“The last frost around here is May 15,” he said, warning anxious gardeners and orchard keepers.
“If it stays cool, then we don’t have to worry,” he said of the maturing fruit crop.
Last year was rated as one of the best in five years for peaches and apples, as weather conditions remained steady, preventing fruit trees from maturing too fast and being snipped by late frost.
On. Jan. 4 Mr. Wingfield recorded lightning and thunder with 52-mile-an-hour wind gusts and temperatures four degrees warmer, overall, than January 1991.
February dawned with robins but they were soon scattered as temperatures were one degree cooler than the February 1991.
