The Washington Town Council adopted a budget that was cut by $16,500 from the original proposal Monday night and also held a public hearing with the Planning Commission on the proposed revised Comprehensive Plan.
The $97,420 budget is actually $6,160 below the current $103,580 budget. To do this the council cut $1,000 out of the payment for the zoning administrator, $300 from subscriptions, $5,350 from the salary for a town administrative assistant, $2,000 from contract services for capital expenses, $3,000 from materials, $1,000 from temporary labor, $3,000 from trash removal, $500 from maintenance materials, and $350 from maintenance services.
There was little discussion on these cuts. However, councilman Newbill Miller suggested that instead of paying $12,000 to cover expenses of the fire department, the council should contribute $1,000 each month to the department and let the board of directors of the fire department decide how to spend the money.
Treasurer Brad Fisher said the town’s auditor wants to see bills to go with every town expense. “If I just give them the money I don’t know if they are using it properly or not,” he said.
Member Susan Parrish agreed with Mr. Miller and Mayor Dean Morehouse agreed with Mr. Fisher.
When member Janice Moffett said she agreed that the town should have a breakdown of expenses for the fire department, Mr. Miller moved to approve the budget without changing the way the fire department receives its funds.
The budget still contains funds to paint the roof and trim of the Town Hall, funds for the heating and air conditioning system for the building, and funds for storm windows. The council agreed to encourage private
