ber though. It was at a house in Harris Hollow. They were dancing the Virginia reel. The host had an “epileptic fit, and they dragged him out of the way and kept on dancing.”
But mostly things were pretty quiet. “You’d go to someone’s house, talk, go home and go to bed, go to church,” he said.
He can’t get to his church, the Promise Land Baptist Church, any more. He has diabetes and suffers from chest pains when he tries to do much. He is pleased that his pastor, John Pendleton, comes to visit and brings communion.
“The Lord has been good to me,” he said. “He’s kept me here a long time.”
Recently his friend Nels Parson took him to Washington, D.C. to visit the Lincoln Memorial. He’d been to Washington before, when his niece lived there, but he hadn’t visited the monuments. The cherry trees were blooming. “It was great seeing them and all the people who were there that day,” he said.
He has trouble finding foods he likes to eat that are allowed on his diet. “I used to eat hog meat three times a day, and now I can’t eat hog meat,” he said. “I can eat a little chicken, but they say I have to take the skin off, and that’s the best part.” He said he had been taking pills for years. He joked with his doctor that, “if you cut me open, you won’t find nothing but pills.”
Still, Mr. Jordan allows that he’s had a pretty good life. “I’ve never been in trouble, and I’ve never been locked up, and that’s more than a lot of them can say. My Daddy told me if I didn’t want to get in trouble, stay out of bad company, and I took him at his word.
“But you can’t tell that to these children today. I worry about what’s going to come of this world.”
