served as postmaster for nearly 40 years. He was appointed in September 1940, taking over from his mother, Nena Cannon. She became postmaster when her husband, James F. Cannon, who served as postmaster from 1914 to 1940, retired.
In fact, there was an even earlier Cannon. John N. Cannon served as postmaster from July 1884 until August 1885, but no one seems to know much about him. He took over from James Wright, Castleton’s first postmaster, who started with the post office in 1878.
Ray Cannon said he didn’t really want the postmaster’s job when he applied for it. “It didn’t pay very much," he explained. He said one year he made $400 as postmaster and spent $225 for a trip to Los Angeles for the postmasters’ convention.
