Washington” series will feature performances by the Castle Trio, the ' Smithson String Quartet, the Smithsonian American Song Company and Hesperus.
The series will open at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19 with the Castle Trio and continue at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5 with the Smithson String Quartet. Both groups are known internationally for their performances of chamber music on authentic period instruments.
In addition to appearing in regular series of concerts at the Smithsonian, the Castle Trio and the Smithson String Quartet have appeared in concerts throughout the United States and Europe, and have received critical acclaim for their award-winning recordings on Virgin Classics, deutsche harmonia mundi and the Smithsonian Collection of Recordings.
At 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 13 the series continues with the Smithsonian American Song Company,. , The ensemble, produced by performing arts historian Dwight ' Blocker Bowers, will highlight the music and lyrics of Rogers and Hammerstein. The program will include numerous unpublished songs which were cut from the final stage versions of their most popular shows as „ “Oklahoma,” “Carousel,” “Sound of - Music” and “South Pacific.”
The series will conclude at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 10 with music from the ensemble Hesperus. A frequent collaborator with the Department of Public Programs at the Smithsonian’s American History Museum, Hesperus performs baroque chamber music, colonial and Federal American repertoire, and its own unique fusion of medieval and Appalachian styles called “crossover.”
So that audiences can develop a greater understanding of the material presented in each of the performances, the concerts will be preceded by a lecture led by one of the performers or a member of the Smithsonian’s curatorial staff. The pre-concert lectures will begin one hour prior to the performances and last approximately 30 to 40 minutes. .
