Mr. Perot’s message so far has been, “Trust me, I’ll make it work,” and judging by his success in business the message is a powerful one.
Yet I think Mr. Perot will have to get much more specific to stand a chance of carrying Virginia in November, a state inherently suspicious of people, who make vague promises such as, “I’m from the goverment and I’m here to help you,” or, “Don’t worry, I’ll put the check in the mail on Friday.”
One of the reasons that Virginians might feel that the federal system can be made to work again, without the radical step of electing as President of the United States someone unaffiliated with either of the two major parties, is that in Virginia state government has worked and worked well.
From the time of Jefferson to the present, the General Assembly of Virginia has met its responsibilities to the people. Virginia remains a low tax state but, despite some unfair disparities, has a generally excellent public school systems, has some of the outstanding state colleges and universities in the nation, has a good systems of roads despite the gridlock occasionally experienced by Mr.
