Many Rappahannock youngsters had a choice of two camps this week with 4-H Day Camp at the center near Front Royal and the All Net Basketball Camp at the high school.
More than 80 chose the basketball camp. On Monday some were learning the game for the first time while others were sharpening their skills for high school sports next year.
This is the fifth year that high school basketball coach Gary Leake has organized the camp, and he said each year it has grown.
The camp lasts four days. On Monday, Keith “Mister” Jennings, a former college player at East Tennessee State University who has played a year of professional ball in Europe, came as guest lecturer to teach ball-handling skills.
On Tuesday Kenny Blakeney from Duke University taught shooting, and students worked at learning set plays such as “give and go” and “pick and roll."
On Wednesday Carl Carter from James Madison University was to teach defense and rebounding.
Thursday is to be an all-day double elimination tournament for each age group. Parents are invited for the day and athletic physicals will be given after the camp ends.
The students are divided into groups by age and sex. Each had many opportunities to practice the skills that were taught. All six baskets were in use as the day went on.
Mr. Leake said he had also a staff of 10 working as counselors, including four faculty members, three high school alumni and three area college players. Mr. Leake said this will give the camp an eight to one ratio of staff to campers. “This provides an opportunity for us to work with the kids in small groups,” he said.
