the road. He built a customized piece of furniture with the postmaster’s desk and pigeon holes for mail on one side and a window for postal customers on the other. It is now in Marti Cannon’s basement.
Over the years he watched as post offices in Scrabble, Rock Mills, Laurel Mills and Estes were closed and consolidated into Castleton. His brother Alpheus Cannon delivered the mail on the rural route.
Ray Cannon also farmed, “I let Ruby do the work while I was farming,” he said. He is still farming, and keeps a herd of purebred Angus. His son Jimmy helps with the farm and has his own herd, but he also works outside the county for the Marshall Farmers’ Co-op. And, Mr. Cannon sells a little real estate.
Mr. Cannon has a set of receipt books from the post office that go back to his father’s day. On one page are receipts for money orders, one for three cents.
He also hopes a way can be found to keep a post office in Castleton, | but after nearly 100 years, he says his family is through running it.
