Copper has come up with a brilliant idea for the children of the house who won’t take their dirty clothes to the hamper in the ! hall. An attractive oak bookcase is combined with a pullout door which hides a plastic bin. Voila — the perfect combination — the children can do their homework and put their dirty clothes away all at the same time.

Copper started working with wood as a boy, progressing to the point that he was able to build his own home several years ago. Gaddis said he started his hobby in his thirties when he “at last had the money to buy the expensive tools necessary to build the type of furniture he wanted.”

Both men are ready to custom build any type of kitchen cabinet or furniture arfil say they can do it < just from a picture or a custom- ' er’s idea.

“It took me six months and * gallons of lacquer to get this proc- • ess just right,” said Gaddis. *

Other members of the family * have gotten into the act at Talia- * ferro’s as well. Gaddis’s mother- * in-law, Joanne Gust, a talented ’ artist in her own right, creates | floorcloths, an old-fashioned item * to sell at the shop.

Floorcloths are made out of » thick canvas, painted with Pennsylvania Dutch art and then varnished. The result is a colorful * mat that can be hung on the wall or actually used on the floor. i

“These floorcloths were used as early as the 1400s,” said Gaddis. “You are apt to see them in historic homes. In fact, Thomas Jefferson had one in the White House.” ;
