A Rappahannock County jury found Susan Eaton of Sperryville guilty last Thursday of shooting at a Crop dusting airplane last May. ; Mrs. Eaton had been charged with interferring with the operation of an aircraft so as to endanger the life of the pilot and with destruction Of private property. The jury found tier guilty of both charges and fined her $2,500 on each for a total fine of $5,000. 1 Judge Shore Robinson took the jury’s sentence under advisement to await a pre-sentence report. ; The pilot, James E. Hubbard, 5?, said he was flying the red and white crop duster on May 21 and spraying Jlalathion under contract from the Rappahannock Farmers’ Co-op on two fields near the Sperryville Emporium.
After making each west-bound pass over the field, he made his turn ground Mrs. Eaton’s house. “I was making a left hand turn and looking ' along the left wing when paint chips Came flying off the left wing. I heard the sound like hail on a tin roof and I thought, this can’t be happening to me,” he said.
“I dropped my left wing down and saw a woman with dark hair pulled back maybe in a bun, wearing a lavender or purple T-shirt with a shotgun at her shoulder, the barrel pointed right at me,” he added. In response to a question he said that the shooting occurred about 2:30 p.m. “But I didn’t stop to look at my watch,” he said.
Hubbard said he immediately turned away from the house and began checking his gauges. When he became confident he was losing neither fuel nor oil, he turned back towards the Culpeper airport. He was able to spray out the remaining 20 - 30 gallons of chemical he had on board on another field that was on his spray list that day.
