New window designs are worked up into full-scale layouts referred to as cartoons. The cartoon is the guiding drawing for what the finished stained glass window will look like. All dimensions, cut lines, lead lines and colors are accurately depicted on the cartoon.
“I know I’m making this sound easy,” said Jones, “but it really isn’t. The concept is simple enough, but some glass is so temperamental it will literally explode if you touch it the wrong way with a cutter. ”
The next stage in the process is painting. Most, but certainly not all, large stained glass windows have a painted scene on them.
Glazing is the next step in the process, the physical fitting of all of the glass elements into the lead framework. Before fitting, the cames are stretched to make them easier to shape nad fit to the glass. The cames are mitered for a close fit and soldered together to form the final design, then placed in a frame.
