The Atlanta project, Steubing said, is a typical vertical restoration; the work is done on-site with the windows still in place on the building. This method requires many stories of scaffolding; skilled, patient, deliberate artisans; and a touch of luck.
According to Fred Dennison, president and founder of the company, the luck comes into play most often concerning weather, a prime scheduling factor.
“When you’re trying to replace centuries-old glass with just the right shade, so that when the light hits it the new piece matches the old, there’s a bit of good fortune involved,” Denison said.
He has been in the stained glass business for 38 years, starting with a firm in Michigan before moving to Virginia and forming Shenandoah Studios in the ’70s. He is the antithesis of the stereotyped corporate head, dressed in company coveralls and most definitely getting his hands dirtv.
