state to join in asking their legislators to increase state aid in the form of low interest loans and funds that do not have to be repaid. School Superintendent David Gangel said that VPSA bonds are currently selling at just under 6 percent.
Dr. Gangel also presented the School Board with estimates for the budget he will present March 2. He said the budget will call for about $295,000 in increased operating costs. In addition it will include funds for an architect, bond counsel, and interest for the first six months for bonds for an addition to the elementary school.
About $100,000 of the increase is for teachers’ salaries. The proposed salary schedule would range from a starting salary of $22,387 for a beginning teacher to $34,066 at the top of the scale for a teacher with 27 years experience. All teachers would get at least a 3 percent raise. Those with four or more years experience would get an additional step increase.
The budget will also include 3 percent raises for teachers’ aides who will also get step increases and 3 percent raises for administrators. Other employees will receive 4 percent raises.
The budget will call for nearly $14,000 more to increase the amount paid toward health insurance and about $7,100 more for supplements used to compensate coaches, department and grade level chairmen and club advisors.
