Rappahannock News Staff Writer ; After many years, Rappahannock County finally has a Head Start program.
The Child Care and Learning Center has a grant to serve 17 three hnd four year olds. The program started in December and by February all 17 slots were filled.
Although this is the first year With Head Start funds, CCLC director Rose Ann Sharp has had similar programs for the past two years. Using other grant funds, she has been able to provide pre-school experiences for the children of some of Rappahannock’s neediest families. ,, As part of this year’s grant the center was able to use start-up funds to buy a modular classroom to serve the Head Start children. The 24 by 40 foot building has two bathrooms and about 876 square feet of classroom space.
Grant funds also were used to purchase a large piece of playground equipment now being installed and will be used to purchase a bus, Mrs. Sharp said.
By the time the modular classroom is ready for use, it will cost $35,000, she. estimated, and the playground equipment another $6,000. Funds for the ongoing program will amount to about $46,000 for a nine-month program, but this year’s grant will be for less, since Hie program will only be for seven months, she said.
