gram expanding much more. The center is licensed for 90 “full-time equivalent” children. Most of that is used up with the four age groups and the approximately 25 children who come after school. In the future if demand for Head Start increases they may only be able to offer the program to four year olds, she said.
She sees the program as saving the county money in the long run. She expects fewer children will have to repeat grades and fewer will need special services. Children who have had pre-school experiences have greater social skills and their parents are likely to be more involved with their education, Mrs. Sharp said.
She admits that some of these children have special needs and may end up repeating grades or requiring special education, but added that even the one year in pre-school will mean they will put a lot less demand on their teachers’ time.
“I would say that every child could benefit greatly from a developmentally appropriate pre-school experience,” she said. “It has been available for families that can afford it and for a few others with scholarships. Now that we have Head Start more can benefit.”
With Monday’s bright sunny weather most of the children were playing outside in various playground areas.
As they prepared to go outside the teachers helped organize the exodus by having them line up according to colors on their coats.
