Last month the literacy volunteer^ and some of their clients had an adventure they don’t want to repeat, but ingenuity prevailed.
The literacy tutors and students meet in the evenings in a basement room of the county library. At 8:30 p.m. the lesson was over, but when they tried to leave they found they couldn’t open the door of their room. The library had closed at 8 p.m.
"Something was the matter with the latch, and the hinges are on the outside of the door,” Libby Whetzel explained. The room has one small casement window above a window well. Only the center section of the window opens. They opened the window and tried yelling for .help, but no one heard them.
Then Susan Fox provided a pocket knife and a dime. Bob Darby unscrewed the window, and one of the students crawled through and easily opened the door from the outside, rescuing those still trapped inside.
Mrs. Whetzel said she wasn’t frightened because they were sure someone would come looking for them before morning, but she is glad to have the telephone and contact with the outside world.
