Statistics for 1992 also support the contention that Rappahannock weather is milder than it was formerly, with winters warmer and summers cooler than we remember.
There were no real cold spells in January or February of 1992. In January, 1984, the low temperature dropped to the teens or below for 14 days with two days when it was sub zero. In January 1985 there were 15 days when the temperature dropped to the teens or below and also two days with sub-zero temperatures.
On the other hand high temperatures in January 1992 were 48 or above for 12 days.
Last summer high temperatures were 77 or below for 13 days in August with five days when the highs were in the 60s. There were no 90degree days last August. July was also fairly mild with seven days when the highs were 78 or below..
January, 1993, saw a continuation of that trend with high temperatures above 50 for eight days including three when it went into the 60s. It was also a fairly wet month with 3.09 inches of precipitation, no record setter but fairly wet for January.
However, February has been dry with no precipitation measured so far and cold nights, but daytime temperatures have been high enough so that ice that forms on ponds overnight melts during the day.
