Pictures of these layers and pillars were shown of places on the Skyline drive, near Steasburg and here at the library. The rock at this site is green, another common kind, and can be seen as one drives up the road to this building.
He spoke of this rock as being hot lava that crystalized, then cooled. Greenstone is older than gneiss, but the latter is harder and often cuts through green.
There is a strip of basalt lava from somewhere in Pennsylvania south to North Carolina, caused by volcanic eruption perhaps 600 million years ago.
