Virginia Governor Douglas Wilder announced this week the appointment of news executive and horseman Arthur W. Arundel of The Plains to a new five-year term as a member of the Virginia Racing Commission.
^Lrundel, founder of Great Meadow and chairman of the VirginS Gold Cup steeplechasing classiOvas initially appointed in 1989 to a three-year term on the newly-established Commission by Virginia Governor Gerald L. Baliles. Currently the only active horseman now serving on the Commission, his nomination will go before the Virginia General Assembly for confirmation this month.
The Commission is charged with the licensing and regulation of racing in the state. At least three applicants are expected to apply this year for approval to build and operate the state’s first tracks with parimutuel wagering.
An Iowa native and decorated Marine Officer in the Korean and Vietnam wars, Arundel is publisher of 'Times-Mirror Newspapers, a group of 13 community papers in Northern Virginia. A long-term horseman, he is chairman of the annual Virginia Gold Cup steeplechase event near The Plains.
