high school assistant principal Larry Carter, who is also the athletic director, to give more time to vocational education.
This is part of series of increases that are intended to free up Assistant Superintendent Robert Chappell’s time to serve as “clerk of the works” for the building project. In addition to having Mr. Carter take over more of the vocational education load from Mr. Chappell, a parttime elementary teacher will be hired to give one of the teachers time io work in such areas as roofs, sewer problems, and heating and water problems that have consumed Mr. Chappell’s time. This teacher will also work on maintenance in the summer. Also the part time mechanic will be hired full-time to free up some of Mr. Chappell’s time that is concerned with transportation. Including the assistant athletic director these additions come to $26,284. • The art teacher’s position will be expanded from two periods a day to four. A group of parents appeared at the board meeting to support more emphasis on art. Dr. Gangel said he had hoped to make the art position full time, but felt he could not ask that much increase in the budget.
A proposal to add a modular classroom at the high school to be used for “alternative education” and an additional teacher to teach the program was also cut from his first draft of the budget, he said.
Dr. Gangel said he expected that federal funding for Chapter 1 will be cut by $40,000 and that he would probably recommend eliminating two teaching positions from that program.
The board learned that an elementary parent John Ferdetta, who works for IBM, had helped the school system get a donation of 48 used IBM PC-XTs and loads of software.
