Water Award
The Culpeper Soil and Water , Conservation District presented Mary Latham of Homer Hill Farm in Rappahannock County with the 1993 Clean Water Farm Award for Rappahannock County.
Mary and her son, Cliff, own and operate a 262 acre farm just south of Flint Hill. On their farm, they raise 21 acres of corn, 9 acres of wheat, 4 acres and oats and manage 198 acres of cropland. * The Lathams have been long supporters of the conservation movement. Cliff has been an active Soil and Water Conservation District Director and Mary has been a participant with the ACP and Bay Cost Share programs for many years. Both have devoted many hours to the conservation cause.
The primary conservation practices used on their farm are: Crop residue and cover crops designed to provide a cover for the soil during the winter to reduce erosion; Stripcropping has been installed to slow runoff and provide better infiltration of rain into the soil; livestock watering facilities have been in'Stalled to keep livestock out of the •streams, grassed waterways, and conservation tillage or no-till.
