Liz Tole came by the other day with several apple recipes. She’s one of the faithful contributors to my weekly nutrition column. She must have known I was getting ready for apple season.

Rappahannock ranks sixth in apple producing counties in Virginia. Six popular varieties make up 90 percent of all apple trees grown in Virginia. There are: red delicious, golden delicious, rome, stayman, winesap, and york. Most of our local orchanrds have other varieties, also.

An Apple A Day

An apple a day is the way a good nutrition. Here are,good nutritional reasons to include apples in your family’s meals: A medium-sized apple has only 81 calories. Apples are high in dietary fiber and complex carbohydrates and aid digestion. Many people eat an apple following lunch or pack one in their child’s lunch box to use as nature’s toothbrush at the end of a meal when it isn’t convenient to brush one’s teeth.

The following recipes are good ways to enjoy apples this fall. The first one for Fresh Apple Streusel Cake is from the American Heart Association Cookbook. Low-fat cakes are hard to find, but you can make one yourself.
