They started in March in Jacksonville, Fla., and will end in October in nearby Arcadia, Fla. In the meantime they will perform in 19 states and travel more than 16,000 miles. Last night they performed in Sperryville.
“You don’t do it for the money,” said Christine Schreiber, who travels with the Roberts Brothers Circus with her husband, Bill, and their 11-year old son, Daniel. The whole family is involved with the show and wears multiple hats. Chris and Daniel do a mother-son juggling act. Bill is the ring master and helps train the animals. And all three of them run a star-billed pony and dog act.
“It gets in your blood,” said Chris, in way of explanation.
Chris got into the circus game after she graduated from high school and answered an ad for a temporary ticket seller at a traveling carnival. When the carnival moved on, Chris moved with it, and the temporary job turned permanent. She stayed with the carnival, and traveled on to the next town and the next town and the .... well, you get the idea. She joined the circus a year later.
The Roberts Brothers Circus travels with more than 20 vehicles, many of them specialized for the 35 employees and 20 trained animals. Lisa, a 7,500-pound Indian elephant moves from show to show in her own elephant trailer. Their tour this year
