To illustrate the value of wetlands of flood control, Clatterbuck recounts that along the Mississippi some of the washed-out dikes are not going to be rebuilt. This will permit regeneration of wetlands to help flood control.
“So, we’re learning from our mistakes that wetlands are very important in flood control,” Clatterbuck said.
As a water-treatment plant, a wetland filters out many contaminants and recharges the ground-water with clean water, “a unique quality of a wetland area,” he noted. This is one of the reasons the Clean Water Act emphasizes wetland preservation.
The Covington River wetland was an early project development. It was built early so it would be well established before the two projects to four lane U.S. 211 between Washington and Sperryville were completed. Other , VDOT-developed wetlands are off Route 17 just north of Warrenton along Cedar Run, and in Albemarle County near the Charlottesville reservoir.
The Route 17 spur in Fauquier County and Warrenton will require adding acreage to an existing wetland along Cedar Creek.
