Who operates the Virginia Lottery? A: The Commonwealth of Virginia operates the lottery, which employs about 300 people. The governor appoints the lottery director and all members of the Lottery Board, who make final decisions on games, prizes and other matters. Retailers are licensed by the lottery, but are not employees of the lottery.

Q: How long can winners wait to claim their prizes? A: For instant games, players have 180 days from the date of the last day of sales for that game to claim prizes. If you win a Lotto free play by matching 3 of 6 numbers, you have 60 days from the date of the drawing to collect your prize. For all other prizes, winners have 180 days horn the date of the drawing to collect prizes. Prizes that are unclaimed go to the state’s Literary Fund. The Literary Fund is used to make low-interest loans for school construction and for teacher retirements.
