I have a deep, personal attachment to the people and places of my native state of Virginia, most especially that portion of the Commonwealth contained within the borders of Rappahannock, Fauquier, and Loudoun counties.
But as an active duty Army officer assigned to Fort Bragg, N.C., I feel pretty far from Virginia in this, the land of pine trees, chiggers and beach sand for top soil.
My surprise was complete then to find in the local newspaper, an article detailing a months-long controversy between Frank Wolf, congressman from Virginia’s 10th District and the headquarters staff of the Shenandoah National Park.
The opening volleys in this feud began nearly a year ago. Facing anticipated budget cuts, Bill Wade, Park superintendent, recommended closing 70 miles of the Skyline Drive from December 1992 through this past June. This, explained park spokesperson Sandy Reves, would provide significant cost savings while allowing park personnel time to focus on major projects ranging from big-game poaching to environmental restoration.
