In what is perhaps the most intriguing art auction ever held in our area, collectors will be able to bid on everything from hand beaded earrings to an opaque Lucite sculpture by Frederick Hart, whose bronze sculpture of three soldiers was added to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
These items will be among approximately 60 pieces of art offered for sale at the First Annual Auction at Middle St. Gallery in Washington this Saturday, Oct. 30.
The auction will benefit the educational and outreach programs of the non-profit gallery. The Hart sculpture will also benefit The Citizens for Fauquier County.
Spirita, from Mr. Hart’s “The Age of , Light” series, will be offered for auction between 3 and 4 p.m. Those will be the hours of the “live” auction. The “silent” auction will run from 2 to 5 p.m.
Of his works in Lucite, Mr. Hart has said, “Sculpting with Lucite is like sculpting with light.”
“We are extremely pleased to be offering works of this caliber in the auction this year,” said gallery president Chris Stephens. “The beauty of the works we are offering is that there is something for everyone, from oils and watercolors to pastels, serigraphs, stained glass, mixed media handmade paper, jewelry', furniture, and ceramics to the Frederick Hart sculpture, which is the piece de resistance.
Other works featured in the auction include the original rendering of Auction, by Pulitzer prize winning cartoonist Jeff MacNelly. That is the poster used to publicize the auction. Mr. Mac Nelly has also signed a limited number of Auction posters and calendars to be offered for sale. In addition Mac Nelly connoisseurs will be able to bid on a MacNelly bronze sculpture entitled Uncle Sol.
Portrait of a Young Woman by Robin Purnell will be offered for sale, as will three works by Laurie Marshall and Rex Slack.
“This is a most unusual auction,” said Mr. Stephens. “It is an invitational. Our committee is jurying all submitted work, and we’re only offering for auction the very best pieces
