The race to succeed L. Douglas Wilder as Governor of Virginia has changed complexion completely during the campaign.
The Democratic candidate Mary Sue Terry enjoyed an impressive early lead which has evaporated as Republican George F. Allen has pulled even and lately taken the lead.
Ms. Terry, 46, had won statewide races for Attorney General twice in 1985 and 1989, while Mr. Allen, 41, has never before sought statewide office.
