The Homecoming weekend activities at the high school got underway last Friday with two student-faculty games.

The women faculty hobbled out onto the floor resembling refugees from a hospital floor. As they discarded their neck braces, crutches and leg casts and the began their warm-up session while the girls, two representatives from each class, warned up under the other basket, it was apparent this was not going to be a high-scoring game.

Assistant athletic director Gary Leake introduced the faculty cheerleaders: “Herminator” Herman, “Feisty” Pfalsgraf, “Victorious” Van Horn, “On the Ball” Gall, “Eager” Eastham and “Dangerous” Dawn Bare.

This was followed by introductions of the women’s team: “Leaping” Long, “Hot Shot" Henry, “Cyclone” Clark, “Grinning” Grimes, “Big Shot” Blubaugh, “Dynamic” Diemal, “Rebound” Robinson, “Princess” Pendleton, “Wild” Whitford, “Killer” Kerr, “LongGone” Logan and “Sneakee” Leakee.

The girls jumped out to an early 2 to 0 lead over their teachers, but then shortly the teachers tied the score. The girls picked up another two points, only to see that score tied also. After that the girls took command and cruised to a 20 to 16 victory.

Next the men faculty took to the floor to practice while the boys took the other end of the gym. “Curly Man” Leake, “Mr. Nice Guy” Tupper, “Mr. Photo” Heddleston, “The big guy with lots of hair” Schlosser, “Fast Buddy” Flinchum, “Marathon Man” van de Graaff, “The Old One” Toth, and “The New Guy” Harrup strutted their stuff while the faculty cheerleaders rocked to “Achy, Breaky Heart ”

The faculty took an early lead and never surrendered it. At one point they sent the women back in to give themselves a break. Girls’ varsity members were referring the game and awarded the faculty a twoshot technical foul. The teachers and students selected Brion Patterson to take the foul shots and he banged both off the rim, one from considerably inside the free-throw line, but the men did not need any scoring from Mr. Patterson, and they ended with a 22 to 15 win.

The weather for Saturday’s outside . events was nearly perfect as students gathered to play a soccer game against high school alumni or to finish working on their floats.

The alumni team had to settle for certain compromises and use Howard Coon, who never attended Rappahannock County High School, and Robert Reeve, who won’t graduate until 1997 to complete their team.

The game was close and scoreless until near the end of the first half when Eddie Sause scored a goal for the students. The half ended with the students ahead 1 to 0.

Following half-time festivities including the Homecoming Parade, the teams took to the field again, and about half way through the second half Jeremy Tole from the Class of ’91 scored a goal for the alumni. The
