The Culpeper Minute Men Chapter, NSDAR, met on Tuesday, Oct. 12 at the Rappahannock Library in Washington with Mrs. Thomas Eastham, Regent, presiding. After welcoming the members and guests, she thanked the hostesses for the afternoon - Mrs. George W. Bain, Mrs. Edward I. Barton and Mrs. Harry L. Smith.
Mrs. Dieter Knuepfer presented the program, “Two Who Loved Their Country,” a dramatic dialogue between John and Abigail Adams as portrayed by Betsey Rapp Hostrop and Virginia Venable Rapp. Both are DAR members and Mrs. Hostrop is an associate member of this chapter.
Almost a year’s research into the lives of the Adamses was required with much of the dialogue coming from the almost 2000 letters of Abigail’s still preserved. With John as a member of the committee to draft the Declaration of Independence, the first U.S. Ambassador to England, a member of namy committees and congresses dedicated to establishing the infant nation, twice Vice President and once President, the letters are a wealth of histroical and political information. Abigail was the first First Lady to occuapy the White House and was the first woman to advocate women’s rights.
