I am writing in response to your paper’s endorsement of the entire Democratic ticket as was expected of you to do. Four years ago the Rappahannock News endorsed L. Douglas Wilder and the voters of Rappahannock went for Mr. Coleman. We can only hope the voters view all the facts and make their own decision this year as well.
In support of our Republican candidates. I would briefly like to say why the voters of Rappahannock should not vote for the Democrats and why they should vote for the Republican slate.
George Allen has stated many times, if needed, he will build new prisons to house repeat offenders. Getting tough on crime and criminals does not mean building new and larger prisons automatically, but it does mean we have to be prepared to do so to back up our words.'
I believe George Allen is the candidate that as Governor will attract business to our state and create real jobs that get people off unemployment and welfare rolls and give real meaning to the average worker’s life.
On Don Beyer’s business experience (as Doug Wilder’s lieutenant) we have seen Virginia passed over for other states for the United Airlines hub, BMW, Mercedes Benz, and other smaller firms. His voting record in the senate has been one of anti-business. We can only expect worse from him under Terry. And what good would he be to an Allen administration? Gridlock in action.
Mike Farris believes that business (not Mike or government) knows best how to prosper and that over regulation has stifled the economy and forced many companies over the edge. Sound policies requiring companies to protect the environment, employees and to be nondiscriminatory without all this government nanny-ism will help us survive in changing times. Presidents John Kennedy and Ronald Reagan believed this and during their terms the country saw growing economies. Why can’t it help in Virginia now? You can expect Mike Farris to be a champion of the taxpayer as our next Lt. Governor, and he would help direct the business and educational issues George Allen is campaigning on.
The third spot of Attorney General is one that really requires some experience in prosecuting cases. As a corporate attorney, Bill Dolan has only tried one criminal case and that was overturned.
Jim Gilmore was the firgt candidate for Attorney General to ask for change in law for truth in sentencing. So here our candidates are sharing the same opinion—stiffer penalties ditto. The difference is the five day waiting period. Jim Gilmore believes that criminals should be treated as such and would support expanded penalties for crimes committed with a handgun. In fact, all four Republican candidates share the view of tightening up the proof of residency requirement at DMV and instituting a felon-check system as esseptial to crime prevention.
