The quietest of the three : statewide races has been the contest for attorney general. The two candidates have widely differing views of the nature of the job. I William D. Dolan III, 49, the : Democratic Party nominee, sees the ; portion as that of the state’s chief le.gj* advisor. James S. Gilmore III, ' 44^ the Republican Party nominee, sees the job as that of the state’s eftief prosecutor.
r Mr. Gilmore criticizes the Demov cratic Party nominee for governor ; Mary Sue Terry for the increase in crijne that occurred during her seven years as the state’s attorney ; general. ; ; ..-;Mr. Dolan says the proposal to abolish parole would cost the state tod much. He favors installing metal detectors in schools to prevent guns I from being brought in.
• Following the leads of their par• ties nominees for governor, Mr. Dolain supports the five-day waiting period for handgun purchases, while Mr. Gilmore opposes that proposal.
Both favor negotiating an imme; diate settlement with federal re-tirees entitled to reimbursement for state taxes collected on federal retirement pensions.
; Mr. Dolan is a lifelong resident of Arlington County. He has served as . president of the Virginia Bar Association and as a member and chair*rttan of the State Board for ..Community Colleges. As an attorney he has been in private practice £for 22 years, handling zoning, medical, malpractice, real estate and criminal defense cases. Most recently as • managing partner of the Virginia offfiee of Venable, Baetjer and Howlard. This is his first bid for public •office. He says his varied back»ground makes him best suited for ..the position. •u .
