He has said he does want to strip the state Department of Education of authority over curriculum and teaching methods and to provide tax credits for parents who home-school their children or send them to private schools.
Mr. Farris has also proposed that the state tax exemption be increased from $800 per person to $2,300 to match the federal tax exemption. Since Mr. Farris and his wife have nine children, that would mean an increase from $8,800 to $25,300 in the Farrises income that is exempt from taxation and a reduction of slightly less than $1,000 in his tax bill.
Mr. Beyer also proposes a tax cut, eliminating taxes on the first $250 of interest on personal savings. He favors an earned income tax credit of up to $2,400 for low-income families.
