Work on replacing the main lines for much of the town of Washington’s water system has proceeded smoothly, council members said. In fact they were somewhat surprised at how smoothly it is going.
“I was amazed,” councilman Ray Gooch said. “I thought we would have open trenches.” In fact, Rappawan, the contractor for the project moved quickly to cover up trenches as quickly as pipe was laid.
The work started on the south end of Main Street at about Porter Street moved up the street to Wheeler Street, turned up. Wheeler Street to Gay Street and has continued down Gay Street. The line will go down Gay Street to Porter Street, turn down Porter and follow that street to the starting point at Main Street, completing a loop.
The blue pipe being laid in the new trenches is heavy plastic with an 8-inch diameter. Along Main Street it is replacing 2-inch galvanized steel, which is badly rusted.
Town Treasurer Brad Fisher said that after the main loop is completed, Rappawan will begin laying pipe along lateral streets, out Middle Street to the Fire Hall, down Mt. Salem Avenue to
