Along Gay Street and Piedmont Avenue buildings won’t actually be hooked into the new line, since 'these buildings are served by a fully-functioning 6inch cast iron pipe.
Laying new pipe along these streets even though the buildings aren’t connected to it, will make it easier to make repairs to the system without cutting off everyone’s water, Mr. Fisher said.
Once all the lines have been laid, the process of transferring buildings to the new lines will begin, Mr. Fisher said. He expects the project to get to that point some time in January. Each effected property owner will be notified when the connection will be made. At the time the new connection is made, property owners may want to replace the lines coming from the water meters.
The project includes replacing connections on the old 2-inch galvanized line with 3/4-inch service lines in heavy plastic to the meter box. In some cases the water meters will also be replaced. Mr. Fisher said most of the buildings also have old galvanized pipe from the meter box to the house. It can be replaced with plastic pipe or new galvanized pipe.
