Vote Tuesday
If all 3,563 of Rappahannock County’s registered voters vote Tuesday, the results of the statewide election may be effected. Certainly Rappahannock voters can have an impact on the election for the 31st District House of Delegates seat.
Continued democracy depends on the willingness of the people to participate in the political process. Voting is the first responsibility of citizenship.
By early Monday morning 72 voters had voted locally by casting absentee ballots. Assistant registrar Betty Estes said this is much smaller than the number who had voted by absentee ballot by this time last year in the Presidential election. However, the selection of Virginia’s top three elected posts will probably have more impact on county citizens than the selection of the President.
The registrar’s office will be open for absentee voting through Saturday. Next Tuesday the polls will be open from 6 a. m. until 7 p.m.
Voters in Jackson District cast their ballots at the Amissville Fire Hall. Voters in Hampton District vote at the Washington Fire Hall. The Sperryville Fire Hall serves voters in Piedmont District. Stonewall-Hawthorn voters cast their ballots at the Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church on Route 626. In Wakefield District voters vote either at the Flint Hill Fire Hall or at the Chester Gap Fire Hall, depending on which precinct they live in.
We urge every citizen who is eligible to vote in Tuesday’s election. If you don’t vote, you shouldn’t complain.
Homecoming
Homecoming this past weekend and Spirit Week last week at the high school were very successful, and the teachers, administration and students deserve credit for their efforts.
The addition of the floats to the parade, the facultystudent basketball games at the end of Spirit Week, and the sports fair in the baseball field following the game all contributed to the spirit of Homecoming.
The only disappointment was the lack of enthusiasm for the game itself. If Homecoming is an opportunity for alumni to return to their former school and share in a fun weekend, more alumni should play, and those who don’t play should be out supporting the team representing them.
Likewise, current students should be supporting the team representing them.
We hope Homecoming will continue these traditions and that support for the game itself will grow in coming years.
