Rappahannock News Staff Writer .. .The position of lieutenant governor in Virginia is not a powerful one. The lieutenant governor presides over the state senate and can cast a vote in the event of a tie.
Other than those two duties, the lieutenant governor is available to serve as governor if the governor is unable or unwilling to serve out the fipur-year term.
Nevertheless the race for lieutenant governor in Virginia this year has attracted national attention largely because of current and former positions taken by Republican nominee Michael P. Farris.
Mr. Farris, 42, grew up in Washington state. He is the president and founder of the Home School Legal Defense Association which he runs from his home in Loudon County. He is seeldng to defeat the current Democratic lieutenant governor, •pt&iald S. Beyer Jr., 43, who is seeking^ second term. - -Mr. Beyer is the only candidate for statewide office who is not an attorney. He is vice-president and coowner of Don Beyer Volvo in Falls Church. His father founded the very successful dealership. Mr. Beyer lives in Alexandria.
