This election for the leadership of the Commonwealth of Virginia is one of the most important in recent history. The gap between the two slates is wide. Voters need to answer the following questions before voting next Tuesday.
• Which party can provide better economic leadership in the next four years?
Contrast the record the Democratic leadership has provided over the last twelve years with anything the opposition has to offer. While the economies of other states with economic problems, the Commonwealth of Virginia has not had a tax increase during that twelve year period. It has shown a consistent prudent management of the Commonwealth’s business. Others recognize this too. For the last two years Money Magazine has named Virginia as the best run state in the nation. The Republic slate, in its pandering for votes, has promised programs which w ill result in tax Increases.
• Which party can provide better education for the children of Virginia?
Here the differences are most stark. The Republican slate shows an antipathy towards public education. One candidate wishes to channel money to private academies instead of the public schools. Another has attempted to purge the public schools of “subversive” literature like Macbeth, The Wizard of Oz, The Diary of Anne Frank, and The Learning Tree.
