Rabies is spreading throughout ^Virginia according to reports from 4he Virginia Department of Health. *- In 1993 rabid racoons were documented in 75.9 percent of the state’s counties, while in 1980, at the onset of the current increase in rabies cases, only 2.5 percent reported .'cases of rabies. During 1993 and ' 1994 rabies was documented among •bats, cats, cattle, foxes, horses, ^opossums, racoons, skunks, dogs, “ferrets and groundhogs in the Com»tnon wealth. r Though many people still asso•ciate rabies primarily with dogs, raHbid cats have out-numbered rabid “dogs for years.
