caretaker cannot be sure that the animal had not contracted the virus before it was immunized. Animal control officials should be contacted to pick-up strays. Untrained people should not try to handle unfamiliar animals. Dr. Jenkins explained that, “They (people) don’t think about rabies when they see that cute little cat by the trash can, but they need to be thinking about it. ”
If you are injured by an animal:
• Immediately wash the wound with soap and water.
• Confine the animal if possible.
• Call the local animal control office to have the animal picked-up.
• See your doctor right away for advice and treatment.
Because summer is outdoor time, there is more opportunity to contact animals, but it is important not to handle animals you do not know, especially wild animals. This should be left to animal control officials.
Virginia law requires all cats and dogs be vaccinated by four months of age, and they can be vaccinated as early as three months Follow your veterinarian’s recommendations for subsequent vaccinations to maintain protection. The only animals for which licensed rabies vaccines exist are cats and dogs, horses, cows, sheep and ferrets.
