I read the lead article, the editorial, and the letters to the editor in last week’s Rappahannock News and would like to provide some comments.
First I would note that the editorial was written less than three weeks into the new council’s work. The President of the United States gets 100 days. Here we appear to be very quick to judge.
As a council, we’re a different group from those in the past. We wish to learn from the past, but we must adapt our own skills and talents to the job. Give us a chance.
My second comment relates to the resolution of the previous Town Council that was rescinded. The resolution on the surface supports a reasonable concept .that the new treasurer needs to learn his job before turning it over to others. However, as it was interpreted at the council meeting by Ray Gooch and applied to every detail of the treasurer’s job, it took on the unreasonable role of perpetuating the long hours Brad Fisher spent on the job and/or constraining the ability of the Town Council to operate. The majority of the Town Council recognized this and voted to rescind the resolution, rather than maintaining it as a continuing basis for arguments. I believe the citizens of the town understand this.
