Members Sharon Pierce and David Fannon reported on the Strategic Vision Conference they attended at Airlie along with Mr. McCarthy. Ms. Pierce said no one from Prince William or Culpeper counties attended. She said she was impressed with “how many things we’re doing right.”
Mr. Fannon said the theme was the “effects of development on rural counties.”
Mr. McCarthy said one discussion impressed him with%ow much the pressures being felt in Rappahannock County mimic national trends. He said areas beyond suburbia, about one to one and a half hours commuting time or about 75 miles from any major city attract retirees, then boomers, then commerce and industry looking for lower labor cost. The influx is followed by a fight about values, architecture, congestion and stress on public services. “Every one of those, I said, "That’s Rappahannock,’” Mr. McCarthy said.
Ms. Pierce said the conference organizers hope to produce a brochure promoting tourism in the Piedmont area. She asked if the county could,contribute $500 for its share of the cost of producing
