Hats off to the Rappahannock Sheriffs Department, and in particular to Chief Deputy Ed Streapy’s swift and efficient investigation of the bizarre drive-by shooting incident that took place on Monday, July 18th at our mailbox on U.S. 522.

Tracking down suspects with the limited information available was a difficult/ and tedious job, requiring him to spend considerable time after his normal working hours on this case.

We need to be aware of how routinely our law enforcement personnel take personal responsibility like this in seeing a case through, and how putting on the badge means being on duty 24 hours a day. One of the best things about living in Rappahannock County is knowing we are small enough to care.

No, to Disney

As a citizen concerned about the proposed Disney America theme park, I have a few comments to share in hopes of encouraging others to take action.

Last- week my husband and I drove to Haymarket to participate in the first anti-Disney vigil, and I was truly moved by the collective spirit of the people that gathered for the event. There were Native Americans from across the country as well as people of all ages from Prince William and surrounding counties present to help safeguard our beautiful countryside from the proposed erroneous “educational” theme park.

Building a park like this under the premise that it will serve to teach our children history is wrong. These parks have exceptional standards for creativity, but they have never been and are not qualified to teach history. Our neighboring, prominent city of Washington, D.C. and its surrounding suburbs are full of wonderful and often under-utilized resources for teaching history. Having our children learn about significant, 1 life-changing historical events through make-believe characters in unrealistic settings will confuse them and distort the truth.

Together, we need to protect our natural, non-concrete, green environment. Our beautifiil countryside is an educational opportunity in itself. And, best of all, it’s free! Let’s protect it and allow our children to continue to learn from the remarkable lessons of nature that are offered to us.

I was traveling around the region recently and as I -talked to people and told them I am from Haymarket, Virginia, I was shocked at their belief that Disney’s America was a terrible thing and how sorry they felt for us.

I must say it made me mad enough to want to get involved and help Disney spread the truth about their project. I can not understand how so much misinformation has gotten into the public mind. Is someone doing this on purpose?

It seems so obvious to me that the theme park and other development will be much better than what the property is now zoned for.
