Family reunions, barbecues, and picnics can actually make you sick. But only because, in all the excitement and fun, people may forget food safety principles.
Reports of foodbome illnesses always rise during the summer months. Last year, in Virginia, there were at least 20,000 cases of foodbome illnesses many of which occured during the summer, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
During special events, food is often left at temperatures in which bacteria can grow, said Ann Hertzler, Virginia Cooperative Extension nutrition and food specialist, at Virginia Tech.
