for a time in the Philippines where he had attained the rank of Captain — but Mary was ordered back to the U.S. with their daughter, Ann, as war dangers enveloped the islands. John, taken prisoner on Corregidor Island in Manila Bay by the Japanese, eventually lost his life to them and never returned home. His wife was later remarried to John Pendleton of Blacksburg, Va.
Meanwhile, Charles, a student at Va. Tech, worked toward a degree in horticulture through his junior year. Then his money ran out and he had to drop out of school to take a job after his marriage to Margaret Crabill, then of Blacksburg, Va. While accumulating funds to provide themselves with a home, the couple moved into the Wood family home in Flint Hill with the senior Mrs. Wood and Brue and Lucy and their young son, Dudley. The arrangement provided happy times and not-so-happy times but these were definitely memorable family times under the guidance and patience of “Granny Wood.” A year after the marriage of Charles and Margaret, Amenta Margaret Wood, hostess for the recent reunion, was bom. She and her parents lived in and around Flint Hill with two additional children, Ruth Stevens Wood and Charles Burrell Wood, Jr. until 1952 when they moved to Blacksburg so that Charles could complete his education. He earned both a bachelors and masters degree — whereupon he became an associate professor in teaching and research in Horticulture and Food Science at V.P.I. until his retirement in 1981.
Nellie Roberts Wood, daughter of the widowed family matriarch, Lucy Henry Wood, attended Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Va.
