sion, 13 campers were attending. Ms. Hoffman was in charge and was assisted by counselor Jesse Rogers. Sara Gentry was also helping out as a counselor for the day. She had hoped to be a full-time counselor for the summer but ended up attending summer school in Culpeper. So she usually helps at camp only on Fridays.
All of the children seemed to love being in the pool, and the only structured part of the pool time was when Ms. Hoffman asked everyone to swim laps. Each child had their own style, swimming freestyle, backstroke, or underwater. Most swam somewhere between 20 and 30 laps, and bragged about how many they had completed.
After spending around two hours in the pool, the group dried off and piled into the camp van, which holds a maximum of 15. Everyone grabbed lunch, which they had brought from home, and looked forward to a picnic alongside the Hughes River near Slate Mills.
After a ten-minute drive from Belle Meade, the van pulled into a parking space by the river. Everyone forded the river, holding hands for stability if needed, and found a spot to picnic on a huge flat rock area along the river.
