Memorial Day weekend an Alexandria family took a camping trip to Chincoteague Island. They came across a stray puppy there. The puppy won the mother’s heart and she decided to make it a family pet and take it back to Alexandria. Even though this woman correctly took the puppy to a veterinarian to be examined as well as vaccinated for rabies, on June 12 the animal became aggressive and bit her on the face and hand. The next day the puppy began staggering and vomiting.
The woman took the puppy to an animal hospital which notified the health department that the puppy had symptoms compatible with rabies. The health department directed that the animal be euthanized so that its brain tissue could be tested for rabies. The animal tested positive for rabies.
The woman, her three sons, ages 9, 10, and 13, as well as a 7-year old neighbor boy have all begun post rabies exposure treatments. Though the boys were not bitten, they were exposed to the puppy’s saliva by playing with the animal and are considered to have been exposed to rabies.
