Rappahannock residents were deeply involved in opposing the Disney Company’s planned theme parkin ‘ Haymarket, and many were celebrating last week when the company announced it would not be built.
It’s hard to tell what effect they may have had because it’s not clear why the company abandoned its plans, but surely the early and constant opposition from the Piedmont Environmental Council played a major role.
Within days of the announcement last November that Disney had purchased some land and had options on more, enough to total 3,000 acres, for a planned theme park based on American history, PEC announced its “Take a Second Look” campaign.
President Robert Dennis said the organization was not opposing the theme park idea itself but the Haymarket location. PEC commissioned a study of other locations for the park. The suggested locations were closer to public water and sewer facilities and major transportation. Reports on Disney’s announcement last week indicated that 10 and a half months later that was precisely what the company was doing.
