they should be no bigger around the chest than nine inches, so they will not get caught in a groundhog or other animal’s hole. If they did get caught in a hole, their tail, which is docked at birth, is just long enough so that their owner can grab it and pull the terrier out of the hole.

There are sad stories of Jack Russells who have not made it out of holes, though, either getting caught and not being able to back out, or possibly by suffocating by being sprayed by a skunk.
Mrs. Caldwell said that Jack Russells are “hell on snakes.” She watched five of hers attack and kill a black snake one day. Kita, a Jack Russell owned by the McNear family 1 in Gid Brown Hollow, killed a rattlesnake by herself. Mrs. Caldwell has observed her Jack Russells hang from the tail of cows, even horses. “They have incredibly strong jaws,” she said.
