munity aware of the potential impact of the Disney’s America park on Rappahannock County and of the early opposition efforts. “Overall I would say it was a coalition effort,” she said. “A lot of people went on foot, on the phone... People took a great deal of time...We had a lot of manpower writing letters. There was always another target, Richmond, Prince William, Washington, D.C...This kind of work is never over.
County residents were far from unanimous in opposition to Disney’s America. When the Amissville Ruritan Club sponsored an evening meeting with Disney representatives, many people came who were interested in learning how to become suppliers for the park. There were parents who hoped the park would mean summer employment for their teenagers. There were people who just hoped one day to take their children or grandchildren to visit the park.
At Country Manor in Sperryville there was a “Welcome Disney” sign. Owner Phyllis Swindler said, “I really did think from a business standpoint it would have been good.” She notes that now roads planned for the project won’t get built. Those roads would have helped alleviate traffic conjestion, she said. She believes that all tourist-based busineses in the area would have benefited from the park bringing in more people “to spend their dollars and leave.”
